I want a house by the sea

For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to live by the sea.  Growing up, I was lucky enough to have some respite from the dysfunction of my family and spend my summers in Puerto Rico.  Some of my happiest memories as a child were spent there: chasing iguanas with my sister, terrorizing my abuela's cat (not in the sociopathic sense, just a little fun), seeing who could eat more raw oregano off the vine (this was perhaps one of the dumbest things I've ever done), and falling asleep to the cool beach air and waking early to roosters.  As complicated and sometimes as difficult as life got for me, I have always found the beach and ocean to be supremely comforting.  There are few materials items I TRULY want in life but this is one of them...a home by the sea.   Given the opportunity, would you live beside the ocean?

  1. Absolutely! We're fortunate that we can walk from our house to the beach (bay) but I really want a house right on the water. I want to listen to the waves and night and smell the sea breeze!
    Great post.

  4. With the exception of the last 2 years i have lived at the Jersey shore, close enough to hear water, and walk to the beach, it's so worth it, and something i miss.

  6. Yes, yes, yes! It's a dream of mine too. You know how a babble on and on about my little island dream (Cedar Key, where I got married). Your summers as a girl in Puerto Rico sound delightful. I'm so happy to hear you had an escape, I know that things weren't easy for you growing up. It's nice that the shore still gives you that felling of peace and place. I do hope you have your home by the sea one day, Christina ;) You deserve it!

  10. Without question. I can't imagine how anyone could be anything but blissfully happy if they could see the ocean from their bedroom window. So gorgeous!

  15. if i had the opportunity, i would pick east coast over anything else for sure, but I would prefer living like right by a lake. Something cleaner...you know? no sang everywhere, no salt/sand in your eyes/nose/ears/mouth/swim suit

  16. During college I worked summers on Catalina Island in the Pacific and to me its the most beautiful place filled with wonderful memories of camping there from the time I was six weeks old. I love sleeping right on the beach and hearing the little waves on the pebble beach. And its where I learned to sail! More than anything, I want to always be near the sea.

  17. I used to live right across the street from the ocean, in San Francisco. I could see it from my window. Falling asleep to the sound of the waves and hearing the fog horn throughout the night were some of my favorite things. I miss it. And I would live by the ocean again in a heartbeat if given the chance.

  18. Definitely! My grandmother has a house on an island off of PR and I would give anything to have a beach house of my own when I grow up!

  19. I grew up 5 blocks from the ocean and refused to move from my beach town when my husband and I got married. I just can't do it! The houses are twice the price for half the space, but to me, it's worth it.

  22. absolutely, except for the added maintence of having the salt water + house combo - but if I had enough money that that wouldn't matter, absolutely I would!

  23. Yes, yes I would. In Vancouver we are blessed with mountains, forests, and the ocean at our disposal; however moving into the Interior of BC I miss the ocean every day.

    Gorgeous photos.
