I'm envisioning stripes and fur balls

I am in desperate (desperate!) need of a rug in our living area. I recently tossed our last rug because it as cheap, ugly, and a really icky green color that was starting to yellow. The trouble with rug shopping is that I know anything I end up purchasing will become my dogs favorite place to sleep, roll around on, and probably (if past experience tells me anything) become a preferred vomit spot as well. What does this mean for me?
2 things:
1)Whatever rug we purchase better be cheap because I'll need to replace it sooner than most.
2) A pattern is a must to help camouflage dirty doggie stuff.
My solution? Black and white stripes because Ikea sells an option or two in this pattern AND it's fairly popular so if Ikea doesn't have it, it should be easy to find.
Here's my inspiration:

This is Ally's house featured on Design Sponge recently and I'm pretty sure that's the Ikea rug I'm looking for...
Does anyone else's rug purchases revolve around their furry beasts? Any suggestions?

Oh I love a good black and white rug! I do have base my rugs around my walking fur ball as well!

Have you checked out RugsDirect.com? I bought my last two big area rugs from there and I am SO pleased with them (and they were both around $250). They have a 150% price match guarantee (easy to take advantage of with a Google shopping search), free delivery, and an extra 15% off right now. Because my dog also loves to roll around and scratch at our rugs multiple times a day, I go for synthetic fibers (olefin/polypropylene) that don't shed like wool does. We got a wool rug from Home Depot and it shed terribly. I'd be careful about those Ikea rugs too -- I don't think they wear very well, and tend to shed and come apart, even with normal use. Here are links to a few rugs you might like. Good luck in your search!

Black and white makes me think Zebra print!! Which would hide doggie stuff... and be fun and sassy at the same time!!

I'm pretty sure that last rug are three striped ikea runners taped together on the underside...I have been looking for b & w stripes too so please share if you find a good one!

We had to choose our rug based on our dog, too. We got a striped brown one, to hide the doggy mess, and her fur (How can such a small, short haired dog shed so much??)
Unfortunately the dark stripes show her light coloured shed, even if it does hide the dirt....!
Good luck in your search for the perfect rug!

DUDE. i hear you on this. i have cats. argh! fur deposits and barf inevitably end up on any rug that i purchase. i have bought from ikea for the same reason as you -- cheap! and you can usually find something decent. i have also bought from urban outfitters, as my cats will DESTROY anything with texture, and this is kind of a fair balance for me (buying something cheap and attractive that they will ultimately destroy).

GO BOY GEORGE! i always take his greatest hits with me on road trips. :)

If you want to order via web - I have gotten some good rugs at overstock.com. Also, check out pottery barn sale rugs-they sometimes have insane discounts!!

Yes, I do! I have two black dogs so it has to be dark enough to hide their hair until my weekly vacuum spree! I think stripes are a great solution too.

I love the rugs--but wouldn't it show spots if some show up? We went with a jute (think natural, dirt, easy to clean) and that's the color of my dog, and the color of many other natural dog happenings (yikes!)

I think it is a good idea... I like stripes, and black and white stripes I think look stylish ;O)

The dogs were exactly the reason I got that rug! And yes, it's Ikea but it's wool and actually wearing really well so I'd definitely recommend it.

I am a huge fan of stripes in general, so I just love this post. My favourite is the first rug - I am a fan of medium size stripes.

Great post!

I feel in love with Ally's rug in her living room and went to search Ikea for that rug.... which they did not have when I went! :(
but
I did find other rugs for my home from ikea! I too have a dog, who finds my area rugs are the perfect spot for vomiting on.... and what is great about ikea is they clean up easy! I have a wool grey rug from ikea, $129.00 7x9 and it cleans great. since it is wool, liquid beads making it easy to blot dry (no rubbing) always blot. then if my dog barfs, pick up then pour water on it, then blot! cleans perfectly.

I also have a few similar to Ally's that I throw in the wash and they wash up nicely!

let us know what you get!

hope this helps.

Looks gorgeous! But surely the white bits will get way dirtier fast? Anyway that's probably a dumb comment. I don't have to worry because I have a bird :)

I love striped rugs! And what a coincidence - I have the second picture torn out from the magazine and tacked to my bulletin board! It's serving as inspiration for an upcoming renovation at my boyfriend's place!

You've gotten lots of great options already... I'd head to the stylish indoor/outdoor ones that feel good on the feet too. Simply hose off if it gets really bad...

Side note: ADORE the SpotBot (by Bissel???)

Love these bold striped rugs!

if you do end up going to ikea, i say buy two of the rug. i always do this and it helps. it's cheap, and when i go back to replace it (ikea isn't exactly lifetime warranty) it's never there!

i wanna see what you get!

Very brave going with white. Ours is chocolate, hunter, cranberry, and a hint of ivory.. we have a brown lab & a black cat. We got ours at Old Time Pottery for like $30, but it does the trick.

What a fabulous home!

I needed a few extra moments to digest the perfect use of shades, patterns, natural elements, and tones. This is the palette that I'm currently working with in my own home so this is great inspiration.

I am also on the market for a rug. I want a thick wool one and have fallen in love with one at Pottery barn. The dog hair stays on the top of the rug, making it easy to vacuum. (My 4-legged bff has brown hair).
