Meet the new couple: Metal + Wood

I have to say, I'm not really one for the industrial look. I suppose my taste is a bit frilly for harsh lines and minimalist space, however, put industrial details along side wood and it's a different story. Industral and rustic, kind of link oil and vinegar, don't you think?
This space is an eclectic mix of industrial, wood, and vintage accessories. Oh, and I want that lamp.

I think I could live in that tub, or at least sleep there. Need I mention the beauty of that floor?

The stove is reminiscent of another time and look at that perfectly aligned plate wall.

This look works in the bedroom as well. Here, it's softened with an abundance of white.
via Atlanta Bartlett
The space is brightened with a pop of red and the kitchen table is unabashedly rustic.
via Living Etc
This loft has warm touches like the leather chair and the plush rug.

This sharp juxtaposition between steel drum pendants and wooden table is gorgeous.

I would be afraid to have that pendant light directly over the bed...
via NY Times
This space would drastically change without the addition of the wooden rafters.

So what do you think about this unconventional combination? Do you like the mix or would you prefer one or the other?

I think its one of those things that if done right, it can be so stunning! These photos are amazing. I love that tub, it looks so comfy! That stove it really something else, its got a great look, normally I don't think I would have gone for something like that, but that picture really does it right! I love the red chairs, but that 'banner?' {I don't know what to call it lol} is really catching my eye! ...ok I need to stop, there is something very intriguing in each shot!

terrific!

This is such a great roundup. I'm totally in love with that bathroom. I don't think you can ever go wrong with this combination.

I LOVE it! The combination of wood and steel is a perfect match. Thanks for the eye candy!

That wall of plates, well, it would send me to a padded room. I would always see one plate not quite right and I'd go nuts. I'm crazy that way, I love chips, peeling paint, rust, etc., but a rug 1/4" off, something of that sort, will drive me nuts.

Love it! I love when styles, textures and especially metal and wood are mixed. It softens up the industrial feeling and makes things comfortable.

You've chosen some great examples - I'm not a fan of in the industrial look. It strikes me as one of those styles that will be as hated as it's now currently loved once out of vogue. In other words, it doesn't have staying power, mostly because it can be uncomfortable to live with. But these choices are very nicely balanced - I wouldn't flee any of these spaces :) The steel drum lights in the dining picture are marvelous.

If you notice, it's the rough, unfinished woods, with all their layers revealed, that best match up with the galvanized and stainless sheet metals.

Like begets like: raw and revealed.

I love the juxtaposition of stainless steel and rough, beaten wood; also really beautiful: rusted, patinaed metal with refined wood;)

im lusting after the loft from design for life. i love the set-up... the bookshelves... and omygod the windows. i'm a sucker for natural light. the addition of the industrial sized fan with the more homely couches is absolutely drool-worthy.

now i need a cold shower. mmm mmm mmm

Oh, I definitely like the mix.. like someone else said, "if done right." I don't think I could do a drastic mixture, but the steel pendants and rustic table is perfect!

i pretty much LOVE most of them!!! such a nice mixture of styles and materials!!!

if it is too industrial, it often seems to feel too cold and masculine (and kind of 90's-ish, in a bad way). these strike a beautiful balance!

I agree with Drollgirl, these have great balance. If it's too industrial I feel like I'm in a prison, so I like how these rooms have some softness and character thrown in-red chair, a plush rug etc. That tub is AMAZING. I would move into that bathroom and be perfectly happy!

I love metal and wood together. I especially like the third picture (kitchen with the plates on the wall). I think for it to work how I like it the metal has to feel industrial and the wood has to feel farmhouse-rustic. Then YUM.

I love a mix of styles and really love all of the rooms that you chose.

My mother has a blue and white plate wall in her kitchen but thrown together very haphazardly and not apple-pie straight like in the pics!

This is by far my favorite way to design! I actually named by business Ironwood because I just love the mixture between a man made item and a natural item. Thanks for sharing these great examples!

May i please have that gorgeous rustic bath? Pleeeaasse?? xx

flynn said...

That first image is exactly what a kitchen should be. It would be too modern for me without all the warm wood and odd antiques. I think as long as you fill a space with things you really and truly love it'll work for you. Good example.

I'd love to have all those rooms under ONE roof! :)

Oh totally agree with you. What a beautiful mix. Now make room in that tub, because I'm moving in as well. We'll have to take turns.

The metal + wood combo is fantastic! I'm dreaming of a more modern and airy space. Or a little island cottage with white-washed wood paneled walls and a stained wood ceiling and wood floors. Either would make me quite happy!

The mix! It's too cold without any wood, I think. My apartment could use some metal, actually, especially now in summer.
