Sunday shop update and some thoughts

There's been a lot going on with the shop and some personal goals I have for it that I'd like to share with you.  The reason I'm sharing this is because, like all things in life, a crafting business develops slowly, thoughtfully and often thrives then fails then either dies or moves forward.  In an effort to be transparent in the struggles I'm facing and the problems I'm attempting to work around, I think sharing with a like minded community can and should bring encouragement and accountability.
If you've been reading for a while, you'll notice that the photos look a bit different. One of my many goals was to improve product styling and photography and to help the shop achieve a more cohesive appearance.
Another goal I have is to sell more locally.  Athens has a large, tight craft scene that can be difficult to break into.  Two ways I plan on achieving this goal is to attend a craft fair here on May 1st in which I'll be sharing a booth with Homemade Grits (assuming we don't get rejected). Secondly, I'm going to start selling my work at Dynamite clothing downtown.  This is a very exciting opportunity that will allow me to get more experience in store displays and consignment sales.
With all of these goals, I had to figure out a way to make more time try to achieve them.  As you may know, aside from running the shop, the blog, and having a full time career that's unrelated, I've also been working at the aforementioned shop on Saturdays.  I've decided to give up the weekend job with the hope that as I move forward with the shop that I'll be able to supplement that income with sales.  Now, whether you quit day job or simply cut back on hours to pursue a crafting business, the idea of depending on sales is simply scary.
Failure is a big fear of mine but it's also a motivator because once I'm able to acknowledge the fear I can push past it towards productivity.
Whether you're thinking about starting a crafting business or you're already selling your goods, I definitely recommend reading these two books.  They've both challenged me to get serious about my goals while offering practical advise about what it really takes to own and maintain a successful crafting venture.
I'm excited and scared, nervous and stressed about the upcoming weeks.  Thank you for being such amazing readers and for giving me a safe place to be myself and to share my thoughts.
I'd love to hear about any new goals you have for yourself, your blog, or your business and how you plan on achieving them.  Let's encouarge eachother to move forward and push past our insecurities and doubts.

Shop Update

I hope you've been having a great weekend!  I just wanted to drop in and show you some of what I've been working on with the shop. I've added three new necklaces and will be adding lots of fun rings in cheerful, springtime hues this week.

The rings will be added throughout the week.  It's amazing how productive I can be when I have two days off for an actual weekend! What have you been up to?

Two New Charmed Necklaces

I added two new necklaces to the shop yesterday. They both make me chuckle just a bit.
Sew Lovely...a long charm necklace $20

Helicopter Flight $18

What really makes me chuckle though is that ridiculously awesome vest I found at the vintage shop this past weekend. It's one of those pieces that I found so ridiculous I had to immediately purchase it and make it my own- even if it does make me look like a 3rd grade teacher circa 1982. This vest might be the real reason I posted this today, MIGHT be.

Haiti Relief + D&OC Etsy

If you haven't heard about the disastrous earthquake that occurred in Haiti please take a moment to read about it here. To say that my heart is heavy is an understatment. I've traveled and done relief work in a few third world countries; Haiti was once on my list. I was part of a group that was going to travel there, years ago, but right before buying plane tickets, Americans were strongly warned to not travel due to violent political uprisings. I had been preparing for months for this trip, reading books on Haitian culture and studying the geography.

Instead of going to Haiti, I took a short trip to the Dominican Republic and worked in an all boys orphanage. Even though this trip was amazing, I still yearned for Haiti.

Yesterday after reading this post by the Lil Bee, I made a donation to the Red Cross' Disaster Relief fund because, you see, even a $10 will make a difference in this impoverished country.
I woke up this morning with a sense of discouragement, like I could do much more.
This could be a terrible idea, but I'm going to try it anyway...
Today, I'll donate 50% of all sales today from the shop to the Red Cross. If you feel so inclined, you can buy something for yourself and know that 50% of that purchase will go directly towards helping our brothers and sisters in Haiti.
Let be clear in saying that this isn't some ploy to get business in the shop. This is my commitment to pledge any extra income I make today will not go into my pocket, but will go to something far better.
Here are some new items I've recently added:
Vintage Perched Owl Brooch in Copper $14.50

Barely Blushing Mini Pink Rose Earrings $7

Blueberries n' Cream hairpin duo $10

Soft Seafoam Mini Mum Earrings $6

via D&OC etsy
So, today, I pledge to donate 50% of all sales (this does not include shipping) to the Red Cross. I'll be sure to contact you and let you know exactly how much of your purchase will be donated. If you'd prefer to donate directly, you can do so here. It's easy and quick and regardless of what situation we're all in, we CAN spare $10.

Sunday Shop Update

It's been slow moving over here...something about having time off makes me feel LAZY. I have managed to add some new pieces to the shop, and I have plenty more to add if I could just stop watching movies and reading and doing all those fun things I rarely get to do.
Does it sound like I'm complaining? I'm not. I just have trouble being unproductive. I think it's a compulsion.

Here are some new items:
Vintage Pin Utensil Set, Fork and Spoon $12

Finger Locket...a vintage inspired cameo ring $14

Classic Love...Long Cameo Locket Earrings $15

Petite Hairpins in Purple and Pink $9

Red Hot...Vintage Glass Screw Back Earrings $14

{all images via D&OC Etsy shop}

I've also relisted some older favorites that I finally have back in stock like the black bird hairpin, the Iva cocktail ring, and the Blackest of Roses mini stud earrings.

I also wanted to thank you, the kindest readers around, for your supportive comments on the engagement post. It means a lot to both of us to have such a wonderful, bright group of people cheering us on.

Sunday Shop Update...A Purple Affair

Once upon a time, there was a girl named Christina who didn't like the color purple. For reasons unbeknown to all of her friends and aficionados, she simply did not wear purple nor did she like to see it in any given space. Then, about two years ago, she began to look at the color in a whole new light. She noticed it's versatility, it's many shades and tones, it's moody emotionality. Slowly, ever so slowly, and to everyone's great surprise, she fell in love with the color. And now, she creates pieces, in her humble little Etsy shop to reign in the new season, where colors become less whimsical and more substantial, and where the illustrious purple can take center stage. From earrings, to necklaces, to brooches, the color purple reigns.

B and I were thinking about having a "sober Sunday" and then, obviously, we decided against it. Hope you're having a wonderful weekend!
