Dress + Blazer Inspiration

I recently bought a vintage boys blazer in a classic navy with little gold buttons on the sleeves. It's a shrunken fit because I didn't want it baggy and it's seemingly perfect, but I'm having trouble getting used to it. I've never been good at this gamine thing. I tossed it over a vintage dress and knee high black boots today and was told by *someone* that it was NOT an ok combo. I can't decide what's wrong with it, maybe if the dress were shorter? It can't be shorter though, I work in an office environment. Here's my inspiration...

Typically, I wouldn't care is someone said something didn't work, however, this was a very emphatic, "what were you thinking?" I'm going to be stubborn though and stand by my decision because the blazer cost $18 and it's pretty.
What's your take on the "boyfriend" blazer? What are you wearing yours with?

I like all of the looks, but that outfit in pic #1 is just adorable! I like the shrunken blazer look, although I would have no idea what to pair it with other than jeans, a fitted tee, and big jewelry. Although I must admit that I haven't bought a blazer in years because I can't stand the shoulder constriction. LOVE the look but I'm a comfort girl. Except when it comes to shoes, then I'm willing to smile through the pain...

??? I think your combo sounds perfect. After all, I think that's what you're meant to wear it with - a dress and knee highs or long boots, no? Who is this someone? I don't want to know or say bad things about the someone but maybe this someone is not very "with it"?

Love the blazer! I'm a fan of the first look too, but not a fan of the hat.

b. how is pairing a blazer over a dress wrong?
c. why don't they mind their own bizness! mkay?!

you probably rocked it, especially if you looked anything like the above pictured.

Who ever told you this is probably a nice person, but I hate to say it they are wrong wrong wrong.

I have so been doing this look (perfect for fall). I Found a little cropped blazer in the boys dept at a thrift store.

The pics are fab, and I am sure you looked AWESOME. Sorry, thanks for the advice, they may be sweet, but wrong.

Rock it, girl! haha.

this is unacceptable. I'm going to guess this somebody wishes they were able to wear a blazer as good as you do :) I am sure you look fantastic, with your blazer and dress. I love boyfriend blazers and I too, like a smaller fit...with a dress...pants...skirt.....whatever works for you :) Happy day, happy day :) Boyfriend blazer and all :)

we need a photo please ;) ...you know I love blazers of all sizes and styles so I'm pretty sure it's not that. Maybe it was the combo of black and navy that this "person" wasn't understanding was "okay" now. I dunno ...again, a picture please ;)

I'm confused....WHY exactly is this not an okay look? I bet you're adorable!

i'm pretty sure there's not anything you couldn't pull off.

"I've never been good at this gamine thing", I hear that often and smile at Audrey's legacy, well, early Audrey, anyway.

Personally I like the jacket but think that rolled up sleeves should have stayed with Miami Vice. I think I must be maturing when some of the 80's reruns leave me cold. Although I think a long early 90's grungy flowery dress would make that jacket work. The short sleeves and short skirts are just... short.

Perhaps this someone just doesn't know what they're talking about.... ?? I can't imagine you wearing anything that doesn't look just smashing. I am being strong and have not shopped or bought anything new forever, on my little student budget... BUT, if I did have a boyfriend blazer, I would wear mine with jeans and a super casual tee... and then maybe dress it up somehow. I wish I had one.

I am totally with you, I love the look I just don't know quite how to pull it off! Oh well, when its cheap and you wear it once or twice it is worth it!

I love all the pics... but unfortunately, if I dressed like that at work, I'd probably be fired- Though my students might like that whole naughty teacher look hahah

I love the first and last pics. I think sometimes we just put something together & not everyone can get it! For sure hold onto it and try pairing it with some other options...there's no way you could have looked THAT bad!!!

Great blazers! I have one, a navy blue one that I keep thinking I have to take the cleaners... it's so awesome to be able to wear coats and sweaters again :)

PS. I just posted about one of my favorite rings today!!

I'm pretty sure it looks great, I love this idea. Who was this someone?? Did they realize how adorable you look in it? You can totally pull it off and ignore that someone as you strut your stuff away.

LOVING my tights right now! Glad others are, too.

Oh the Boyfriend blazer- full of possible fashion statements or fashion mistakes! I think it looks great with jeans and high heels.

Photos like these make me wish it was colder here just so I could wear a blazer! Love!

i love the first 2 looks altho it's hard to tell if the 2nd one looks right from the waist down. the 1st one works because of the fitted top with the fluffy skirt. i'm not sure about the bottom two because of the tunic tops with leggings. it's probably just me.

perhaps yours didn't work because of proportions? i'm believer of the art of dressing which is mostly all about proportions. i'm especially anal right down to the shoes because they really do help to make or break an ensemble. i still commit fashion mistakes. you pick and ditch certain skills as you go along.

i'm not even sure how a BF blazer is supposed to be like. is it long and shapeless? or cropped and fitted? to me, it's still down to proportions.

I love love love blazers (have way too many), but in particular, I can't wait to try out my electric blue Matthew Williamson for H&M one that I got last year but haven't been able to wear even ONCE.

Point being - they're awesome. And I'd love to see a pic of yours!

Also, whoever told you that is a poo-face. You can quote me on that.

The roundup is great. And I think that boyfriend jackets can work on some and not on others. I believe that YOU can totally pull off this kind of look. Just seems to be a great fit with your personality. So, I say, just go for it!

I'm wearing it mainly with jeans but I love these looks with dresses. I'm sure you looked adorable. I think the key is the length of the dress as you said. Want to post a pic of your outfit? ;)

love the 2nd blue dress with jacket & scarf!!

I think the combo sounds great!

I have yet to find a nice boyfriend blazer for myself. Sometimes I think I'm being too picky because the sleeves are either too tight, the body looks too much like a "box", or the body isn't long enough for my torso.

I want to see your final outfit!!

After much trial and error, have finally figured out that little blazers look good, big blazers look bad. So, I'm pro-shrunken.

p.s. thanks for the tip to shop the boy's dept. at thrift stores.
